Lens Paper Due 4/17

Jane Eyre/Charlotte Bronte Lens Paper due 4/17.
PLEASE NOTE:
I am available in B20 everyday at lunch to assist you with thesis, etc.
You cannot write a strong paper without a strong thesis. Everyone who has not seen me already and received guidance on a thesis must come to B20 during lunch if you would like me to help you construct a strong thesis. We will reserve some days in class before the due date to work on the paper. Dates will be announced soon. On the given dates, bring in a printed copy of your outline and latest draft. We may or may not have laptops when working in class.

Paper guidelines:
1. You must complete every section of LensPaperNotes and share it with me via Google Drive. Allow me to "comment".
2. Evidence Organizer must be completed. You must use a minimum of 5 scholarly resources to provide context to your lens and support your thesis. You must use a minimum of 6 references from Jane Eyre (direct quotes) (total 11 minimum entries in Evidence Organizer).
3. Use this comprehensive guide to Writing a Literary Analysis Paper. (Bucks.edu) Your paper must be a minimum of 5 typed pages, not including Works Cited page.
4. All papers must be in MLA format. Please use this comprehensive guide to MLA formatting and citation from Purdue Online Writing Lab.
5. All papers must be shared with me via Google Drive (final paper should be a separate document from LensPaperNotes). Please allow me to "comment".
6. This College Board AP Research Paper Rubric will be used to score your paper. Points will be assigned to each category, and scores will be calculated using our standard 0-9 rubric. You will receive a print copy of the final rubric soon. You can refer to this digital version during the writing process.

“Those Winter Sundays” by Robert Hayden

Prompt: Write an essay in which you explain how the poet uses literary techniques to convey his complex attitude towards his father.

Read/annotate poem, marking it up for imagery, diction, tone, and other techniques that reveal a complex attitude towards his father.
Write a thesis that addresses the prompt.
Write a quick outline of how you will prove the poet’s attitude with text evidence and analysis. What literary techniques/devices did he use? Where are they especially effective? What is the effect?
How does the poem evolve? Address the use of literary techniques/devices in the beginning, middle, and end of the poem AND their effects in framing the attitude the speaker has towards his father.

Literary Lens Paper: Resources

Use the following resources to secure ONE scholarly article that will serve as your lens. Use keywords such as "psychological criticism" or "feminist criticism". You are not searching for other articles that criticize Jane Eyre, but rather you are searching for an article that will form the basis through which you examine the novel. Look for articles that provide solid overviews of your chosen school of criticism, provide overviews of the time period or genre in which Jane Eyre falls, etc.

OVERVIEW OF LIT CRIT:

Purdue OWL sums it up, and adds more to the lesson we did in class.

2. Next, read a minimum of ONE literary criticism. You can read one of the literary criticisms in The Norton Critical Edition (at back) or from another source (see list of sources below or use your own, trusted scholarly source) that will give you a framework for writing your own.

3. Then, browse through these resources.

JSTOR:

Create an account on JSTOR. You will be able to search through scholarly articles related to your lens. You can save up to 3 articles at a time on your "shelf".

QUEENS LIBRARY:

With your Queens Library library card info, you will be able to search through their extensive research library.

GOOGLE SCHOLAR:

You are already signed in when you are signed into your WJPS email. Google Scholar allows you to search by topic, time period, author, etc. and create a library of sources (click enable).

FIND ARTICLES:

A deep database of scholarly articles/sites. On Find Articles, you can search by lens. You don't need to create an account to read the articles/visit sites.

PROJECT GUTTENBERG:

Project Guttenberg offers an extensive, free database of downloadable books (or books to read online).

2016-2017 Essay Prompts
1. Some students have a background, identity, interest, or talent that is so meaningful they believe their application would be incomplete without it. If this sounds like you, then please share your story.

2. The lessons we take from failure can be fundamental to later success. Recount an incident or time when you experienced failure. How did it affect you, and what did you learn from the experience?

3. Reflect on a time when you challenged a belief or idea. What prompted you to act? Would you make the same decision again?

4. Describe a problem you've solved or a problem you'd like to solve. It can be an intellectual challenge, a research query, an ethical dilemma - anything that is of personal importance, no matter the scale. Explain its significance to you and what steps you took or could be taken to identify a solution.

5. Discuss an accomplishment or event, formal or informal, that marked your transition from childhood to adulthood within your culture, community, or family.

Required Texts

Please purchase your own copy of each of these texts. Purchasing them all at the start of the year is a great idea; this way you will be prepared when we begin each new unit. I encourage you to purchase gently used books on Amazon (if available) - make sure they are in good or like new condition. You will be reading in class and at home and annotating the texts using highlighter, pen, and post-it-notes/flags.
